Woodland Heights Medical Center Nurses Recognized for Outstanding Care with Prestigious DAISY Awards
5/15/2025
Lufkin, Texas (May 12, 2025) – Woodland Heights Medical Center is pleased to announce the recipients of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The DAISY Award, presented by the DAISY Foundation, recognizes nurses who demonstrate exceptional compassion, commitment, and excellence in patient care. Winners for the first quarter of this year were Jake Schmidt and Jacob Palomo.
The DAISY Award is a national award program that recognizes nurses who go above and beyond in their roles. The award is presented in recognition of their outstanding service and the significant impact they have on the lives of their patients.
The first recipient, Jake Schmidt, works in the critical care unit at Woodland Heights and the family of one of our patients had this to say about Jake: "Jake was called to be a nurse. People like him make what are the worst possible moments for others bearable. Please let him know he makes a difference that's appreciated."
Jacob Palomo, the second recipient, works in Emergency Services and was nominated by several of his co-workers who had great things to say about him: "goes above and beyond," "team player," "always lends a helping hand," and "proactive nurse with a big heart."
“These DAISY Awards reflect the heart of nursing – compassion, dedication and clinical excellence,” states Chief Nursing Officer Allison Cain. “Our nurses go above and beyond every day, and this recognition is testament to the extraordinary care they provide. They truly deserve this honor.”

About the DAISY Award
The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of an autoimmune disease. The care he received from his nurses inspired a way to thank nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.
