Woodland Heights
Celebrates 4th Annual Women in Red Luncheon
Woodland
Heights reminded women that Red is the Heart of the Matter
during their 4th Annual Women in Red Luncheon. This year’s
event was a monumental success with over 600 women in
attendance. The luncheon, which is designed to heighten
awareness on women’s health issues, specifically heart
disease, was held at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center April
23rd.
During the luncheon, the audience listened as R. Bachireddy,
M.D., spoke on heart disease and the signs and symptoms one
needs to look for. Worldwide, 8.6 million women die from
heart disease each year. 267,000 women die each year from
heart attacks, which is six times as likely to kill women as
breast cancer.
For the past 20 years, Woodland Heights has received
numerous national awards and recognition for it’s excellence
in cardiac care. The hospital’s Heart Center has performed
over 2,200 open heart surgeries and over 16,000 heart
catherizations since opening its doors in 1987. As we begin
our 90th year of service to East Texas, we will continue to
strive to bring personal and quality care to the residents
of Lufkin and the surrounding areas.
During the luncheon, guests were also treated to a high
energy, motivational message from LaDonna Gatlin. She
encouraged those in attendance to “sing their own song”
while keeping us all laughing and reinforcing the importance
of timeless values such as character, integrity and honesty.

Getting Smart About Your
Heart
Heart
Fair 2008 was held Saturday, February 2, from 9 a.m. to noon
at the Lufkin Mall. According to Jennifer Stevens, Woodland
Heights’ Marketing Representative, there were hundreds of
visitors taking advantage of the free lipid profile testing
offered by Woodland Heights and health information available
by the many vendors. “This Heart Fair is a great way to kick
off American Heart Month and to get the community actively
involved in improving its health. The free testing allowed
participants to learn more about their cholesterol levels,
an important part of heart health,” said Stevens.
February is American Heart Month and a good time to bring
awareness for heart disease, as an estimated 80.7 million
American adults have one or more types of cardiovascular
disease.
The vendors for this year’s fair included physician offices,
home health agencies, nutritional foods, healthcare
institutions, and much more. Also on hand was a Registered
Dietitian offering Body Mass Index calculations and
information on heart healthy nutrition, along with Physical
Therapists testing grip strength and information on
Rehabilitation Services, Wound Healing and Sleep Disorders
Laboratory.
Another First for
Cardiac Care in Texas
Woodland Heights Medical Center (WHMC) is committed to
bringing the foremost in cardiac technology to our patients.
The hospital is the first in Texas to offer the Innova 2121
IQ All-Digital Cardiovascular Bi-Plane and Interventional
Imaging System. Using this versatile new digital imaging
system, WHMC physicians, now have enhanced capabilities in
the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.
“The GE Innova 2121 imaging system is helping Woodland
Heights physicians clearly see the blood vessels and anatomy
of the heart, as well as blood vessels throughout the entire
body- even the smallest, finest vessels all the way to the
fingertips,” said Lance Jones, CEO of WHMC. “This new piece
of equipment is the 8th in the nation and the only one
currently being used in the state of Texas. It is also
expected to play a critical role in helping our physicians
treat a growing number of chronic heart and vascular
conditions including atherosclerosis, a build-up of plaque
that affects blood flow in arteries.”

Woodland Heights Medical
Center Announces that the Air is Clear
In a cooperative community health
initiative, Woodland Heights Medical Center and Memorial
Health System of East Texas announced that all of their
hospital campuses will be smoke-free beginning today.
The announcement comes following several months of work by a
joint committee that has developed joint policies that the
hospitals will use. “From the start we determined this was a
combined project that was focused on improving the
healthcare environment of our facilities,” said Lance Jones,
CEO of Woodland Heights Medical Center.
November 15 was chosen as the implementation date since it
is the day of the Great American Smoke out. “We believe that
this is the right time to take this important step to create
a healthier environment our patients, employees and guests,”
Jones said.
“We work hard to set the standard to treating people who are
sick, we believe that it is equally important to set the
standard for health and wellness in our community.
The campaign to go smoke- free, known as “Clear the Air”,
will be featured on signs and in information distributed at
both facilities. For any information regarding how you or
someone you love can quit smoking please contact Tara Watson
at 936-637-8687.

Dr. Julio Williams conducted Lufkin’s
first Transmyocardial
Laser Revascularization (TMR) heart procedure
Using
a high-energy, computerized laser, Dr. Julio Williams
conducted Lufkin’s first Transmyocardial Laser
Revascularization (TMR) heart procedure Tuesday at Woodland
Heights Medical Center.
Fifty-six-year-old Archie Williams became the first heart
patient to undergo the new procedure that uses a carbon
dioxide (CO2) heart laser to create channels in the heart to
improve blood flow.
During a three-hour procedure, Dr. Williams, a Lufkin
cardiovascular surgeon, performed the TMR and a triple
bypass on Mr. Williams.
The laser uses a computer to direct laser beams to the
appropriate area of the heart in between heartbeats, when
the ventricle is filled with blood and the heart is
relatively still. This prevents electrical disturbances,
arrhythmias, in the heart.
Dr. Williams created 17 channels in Mr. Williams’ heart that
are an average of one millimeter wide — about the size of
the head of a pin. The channels stopped Mr. Williams’ chest
pain, which until Tuesday, could not be stopped by other
medical procedures, Dr. Williams said.
